In 1978 at the age of16 years old my dad put my brothers and I in TKD at Saint Augustine’s College in Raleigh North Carolina. We went upto yellow belt and then had to stop. I didn't know at that time if my dad could afford tuition for the three of us but he took us out of training. After that we went to my Uncles house and asked him for one of his burlap bags and then I filled it up with dirt or sand and hung it up in my Grandmothers yard in a very, very tall tree Then I started punching it. I graduated from East Wake High School in the late 1980's. Before graduating I joined the Army delayed entry program. In August of 1980 I Was in basic training and AIT. I took my basic training at Ft Leonard Wood Mo. I went back home for 2 weeks and was then Shipped off to West Germany. I served 3.5 years and made it to E4. I got married in Germany and stayed there a total of 6 years. My family and I moved to North Carolina and I joined the Army Reserves for a year and then transferred to the National Guard. After the Gulf War my family and I moved to Coventry England. I’ve always been inspired by the martial arts because of Bruce Lee. My second oldest son started taking TKD and then I followed but because we couldn’t afford classes for both of us my son stopped and I continued until I got my 1st degree black belt and then in 1995 I came back to North Carolina to pave the way for my family. At the time in Coventry Grand Master Roy Oldham was a 6 th degree and was the head instructor. Mr. Oldham held a GTF seminar and Grand Master Park was invited. It was a great seminar because I learned a lot of new techniques. I found a reck center in Raleigh North Carolina and taught there for some months. I taught my kids and one of my brothers. So as time went on and my family grew older and moved out, my older sons moved to Utah for College. They go married and so their mom and I decided to follow the grandkids. In 2013 my kids mom and I divorced. We lived in Provo,Utah and no I didn’t like it at all. Then my parents died and soon after that I moved to Salt Lake City. In 2014 - 2016 I attended college at UVU and took several classes in Brazilian Jiujitsu. That was very, very interesting. My older twin son got married and they rented a house with a garage. I’ve been training a teaching out of his garage now going on Five years. I’m still teaching there until I get enough students or capital to rent my own place, which ever comes first.
Master John Tompkins sent me a training Manual before he died. He seemed to be very nice because he sent me a Christmas card once. On April 28, 2018 I was promoted to the rank of 2nd degree black belt. Then April 29,2018 I attended the GTF seminar. June 19th I was promoted to 3rd degree black belt. I have a student now who will be testing for his 1st degree in March 2023. He loyal dedicated and faithful and I’m extremely proud of him.
